The 214 field guide

214, 469, 972, and 945 explained

Four codes share a Dallas-area region. Understand the history before paying for a particular identity.

An original code and later overlays

214 dates to 1947. The 972 split arrived in 1996, and the region became an overlay with 469 in 1999. The latest code, 945, began assignments on January 15, 2021.

The current overlay arrangement means those codes serve the same region. The original 214 identity may appeal to your business, but it does not provide superior network performance or cheaper calls.

Dallas is not every part of DFW

The overlay serves Dallas and surrounding communities, including the places covered in our local guides. Do not use 214 as a substitute for explaining your actual address and service territory.

Local dialing uses the area code and seven-digit number, including calls between overlay codes. Whether a call is included in a plan is a question for the provider, not something the code alone determines.

Make the whole number earn its price

Compare the price of a familiar area code plus a premium ending with a simpler number. A useful decision balances your audience, the full digit sequence, your budget, and receiving-carrier eligibility.

A particular area code is not proof of a caller’s present location. Keep business identity and contact information clear wherever you publish the number.
